So nice to connect with you all again!
Hope you are all Well and Happy!
I received a beautiful and so relevant New Year greeting from Pullahari Monastery, a Buddhist center in Nepal.
I found it to be so special, that I wrote it onto two cards. One to read with my morning Mindfulness practice, and the other, to keep as a bookmark for whichever book I am currently reading.
I changed the first line, “In the Newly Arisen Year….” to “In the Newly Arising Moment”, to give it relevance year round.
Here it is:
“In the Newly Arising Moment, may all excellent wishes bloom. May each mindstream brim with happiness, kindness and compassion.
Through our jeweled Mindfulness, may both the temporal and ultimate experience be auspicious.
With luminous Wisdom, may we see the Full Splendor of things as they are.”
I also received a wonderful message from Plum Village in France. Each Lunar New Year, Thich Nhat Hanh provides two poetic phrases in calligraphy, to inspire and nurture our Mindfulness practice throughout the year.
This year they are:
“Sitting in Freedom on this Sacred Land.”
And
“Walking in Peace Everywhere on Earth.”
These are contemplations we can repeat to ourselves, to both ground our body and mind in the present moment or to repeat softly to ourselves as we go about a busy day, to maintain our centeredness and connection with our own Presence.
We can also deeply integrate these phrases, by combining each of them with our breathing:
For example, we can say to ourselves,
“Sitting in Freedom on this Sacred Land” as we breathe in, and “Walking in Peace Everywhere on Earth” as we breathe out. These are living aspirations we may wish to nurture within us.
You can adjust them to suit your natural breathing pattern.
I actually like to use just one at a time. For example: Set 5, 10 or 15 minutes aside, close your eyes or keep them open with soft focus on one spot. Repeat the full phrase a few times, then say,
“Sitting in Freedom” with the inhalation and “On this Sacred Land” with the exhalation.
Or, “Walking in Peace “ on the inhalation, and “Everywhere on Earth” on the exhalation.
That’s how I like to do it, but have fun with it. Engage with it in the way that suits you!
Thich Nhat Hanh has sent the beautiful hand-written calligraphy of these phrases, in his message, which I have attached here.
You can download and print both of them - provided in two sizes - which you can place, to use as touchstones, in both your home and your workplace. They would be lovely reminders in your kitchen, by a light switch, near your computer or by the front door, to see as you leave your home.
With the warmest wishes, that they will bring you inspiration and nourishment In the New Year to come!
Stay Well & Happy!
